Located in the McLaren Vale region of South Australia, d’Arenberg is a winery that produces over 60 quirky, uniquely-named wines. The Dead Arm is the name of their flagship wine made from Shiraz, but their vineyards are additionally planted with Grenache, Chardonnay, Viognier, and Marsanne. Because d’Arenberg obtains fruit from numerous vineyards, their portfolio is wonderfully diverse. From the warm and dry Mediterranean climate in McLaren Vale to the cool winds of the Sellick Hills, the biodynamic and organically certified winery is known for several different styles of wine.
D’Arenberg was established in 1912 by Joseph Osborn and his son, Frank, who joined him on the vineyards for nine years before his father died in 1921. Fast forward twenty years to 1943 when Frank’s son, d’Arry, was forced to leave school at the age of 16 to help his father run the business due to his father falling ill. D’Arry’s son, Chester, joined the family business in 1984 as Chief Winemaker and has been producing distinct wines with traditional methods ever since.
