“A creek divides the parcel [in Stags Leap District, Napa] roughly in half, producing two noticeably distinct sites on one small estate akin to the Right Bank and the Left Bank in Bordeaux... On one side, classic volcanic soil produces smaller, low-yielding vines that generate wines with powerful tannins. The soil on the other side is more loamy and deep, supporting bigger and stronger vines that give more generous, profound, layered wines.”
– Philippe Melka, Winemaker
Being one of the self proclaimed Napa Grand Crus, Roy Estate prides themselves with their focuses on the quality of their wines above all. Their production is limited to grapes grown right at the foothills of the Vaca Mountains, their soils are rich and ideal for Cabernet production.
The Roy Estate Proprietary Red Napa Valley 2008 is a carefully crafted Bordeaux-style blend featuring 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot. This small-production wine is a product of the unique terroirs created by the creek dividing the estate vineyard, with rocky alluvial and volcanic soils contributing to its character. Aged for 18 months in French oak, the wine showcases a deep plum/purple hue with enticing aromas of blackberries, cassis, and earthy notes. On the palate, it is full-bodied with a smooth texture, balanced acidity, and building tannins, suggesting excellent aging potential. The cool climate of the region enhances its freshness and complexity.
