“Mayacamas Vineyards is among the classic wineries that have made California wines among the world’s finest. The original stone winery is a Napa classic. The Mayacamas wines remain extraordinary… they offer a freshness almost unparalleled in Napa, along with an intensity of tannin that can invigorate fans of the valley’s classic wines.” – Jon Bonne, The San Francisco Chronicle
Near the summit of Mount Veeder in Napa Valley lies the historic Mayacamas winery that was first built in 1889. Initially planted with Zinfandel vines, when Jack and Mary Taylor purchased the land in 1941 they planted the first Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon vines, and created the wine label that is still used today. The 1971 Cabernet Sauvignon was entered into the legendary 1976 Judgement of Paris tasting, and although it did not place in the original competition, it received second place in the 2006 anniversary tasting. By 2013, Charles and Ali Banks of Screaming Eagle had purchased the winery that is known for its small amount of high quality and complex fruit. Located above the fog line where the vines benefit from warm nights and cool days, the winery’s vines are stressed just enough to produce wines with significant tannins that provides a solid frame to age the wines which are considered some of the most elegant in California.
Wines due to arrive December 2024.
