Located on a serene hill overlooking the Russian River Valley, Copain Winery is known for producing Pinot Noir and Syrah with restrained and balanced characteristics unlike quintessential California wine. Wells Guthrie is the owner and winemaker for the establishment, and he purchases fruit from vineyard locations throughout Anderson Valley and Yorkville Highlands. While working for Wine Spectator, Gutherie fell in love with wines from the Rhône Valley so much that he ended up moving there and working for Michel Chapoutier for two years. After working for Turley and Martinelli in Napa, Gutherie made the transition to cooler climate and started Copain with his ‘buddy,’ Kevin McQuown; ‘Copain’ being the French translation for the word ‘buddy.’ The winery producers 25,000 cases of wine annually, but are unique in the fact that they separate their bottlings into cru-like tiers: Tous Ensemble, Les Voisins, and Single Vineyard wines.
