Châteauneuf-du-Pape is the most renowned area in the Southern Rhône and Vieux Télégraphe is one of the most impressive wineries in that region. The vineyard was planted upon the La Crau plateau (one of the highest places in the area) and the Domaine was established in 1898 by Hippolyte Brunier. The nearly 150 planted acres consist of 65% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 15% Mourvédre and 5% Cinsault. Lauded for noble old vines and Papal heritage, the region is also famed for the pebbles that retain heat and continue ripening the fruit during the night. Arguably the best vineyard in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Télégraphe produces some of the smoothest, most enjoyable wines in the region.
The Vieux Télégraphe Châteauneuf-du-Pape (La Crau) 1998 is a benchmark wine from a storied estate, marking a centenary vintage. Crafted predominantly from Grenache, with a blend of Mourvèdre, Syrah, and Cinsault, this wine showcases a rich character derived from old vines grown in wind-swept galets over red clay. The wine is marked by deep flavors of blackcurrant, leather, and spice, complemented by earthy undertones and a velvety texture. It has matured beautifully, revealing complexity with notes of clove and fig. The finish is long and harmonious, with well-integrated tannins, making it approachable now while still promising longevity. Approximately 60-65% Grenache in the blend.
