In 1995 winemaker and vine-grower Benjamin Romeo acquired a historic cave located below the renown Castle of San Vicente de la Sonsierra in Rioja, Spain. His Contador flagship wine is consistently one of the highest priced wines made in Spain, and was first released in 1999. Made predominately from the Tempranillo grape and aged for several years in French oak, the wines are known to be full-bodied, fruit-driven and extremely extravagant. Both the 2004 and the 2005 vintages went on to receive 100-points from the esteemed critic, Robert Parker. Typically the wines are similarly grouped with Pingus and Vega Sicilia as the cult wines of the country, and because of their prodigious vineyard plots combined with prime terroir, the Bodega Contador is a name to be reckoned with.
