"In Europe then, we thought of wine as something as healthy and normal as food and also as a great giver of happiness and well-being and delight. Drinking wine was not a snobbism nor a sign of sophistication nor a cult; it was as natural as eating and to me as necessary."
- Ernest Hemingway
If you travel to Preignac, to the region of Graves, you will find a First Growth Sauternes producer by the name of Château Suduiraut. Neighbor to Château d’Yquem, Suduiraut is in the family of Château Pichon-Longueville and Château Petit-Village, as they are all under ownership of the AXA. Winemaker Pierre Pascaud is able to create white wines with longevity and sophistication, sourcing from their 180 acres of vines planted to 80% Sémillon and 20% Sauvignon Blanc.
So, you can dust off the “white” shelf in your cellar and let it know it will have company for the next ten years if you wish (and if you can wait). Dry and sweet whites are produced, and one wine that is new to the market and a hot commodity is one that was previously made only for personal consumption, the S de Suduiraut. Historically, the property can trace its roots (no pun intended) back to the 15th century, and the Château itself still has one original structure while the rest were rebuilt in the 17th century (for all you history buffs). The cuvées are hand picked and fermented in 50% oak for anywhere between 18 and 24 months.
Wines due to arrive 2 months after purchase.
