While taking a decorative arts course in London, Ann Colgin fell in love with wine after taking a sip of a 1961 Chateau Latour. Her degree in art history led to a job as a Christie’s auctioneer where her burgeoning interest in wine was nurtured and blossomed into a desire to establish her own winery. Colgin Cellars was created in 1992 when she and Helen Turley secured a parcel of grapes from Herb Lamb vineyard on the lower slopes of Howell Mountain. By 1998, Colgin owned three vineyards which produced small yields, resulting in exquisite red wines: Tychson Hill, Cariad, and IX Estate. As Colgin is a collector of fine art, there is no surprise that her bottlings express the true art of fine winemaking.
The Colgin IX Estate Proprietary Red 2018 is a premium Napa Valley blend primarily composed of Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot. Sourced from a unique hillside vineyard on volcanic soils, this wine showcases a deep purple-black hue. The aroma presents an intricate bouquet of blackcurrants, graphite, and earthy notes, with hints of truffles and spices. On the palate, it is full-bodied and structured, featuring firm yet fine tannins that provide a muscular backbone. Its concentrated fruit flavors are underscored by mineral and savory elements, leading to a long, elegant finish. This wine is crafted for age, promising to develop further complexity over time. Blend percentages: 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Cabernet Franc, 8% Merlot, 1% Petit Verdot.
