With its long history in the Bordeaux wine region dating all the way back to the 15th century, the Chateau Haut Bergey started off under the name La Maison Noble de Pontey until a member of the Bordeaux parliament, Sir Jean-François de Cresse, purchased it in 1700. With a lull in wine production for several hundred years, the winery was purchased in March of 1991 by Sylviane Garcin-Cathiard to try to compete with her brother, Daniel Cathiard, owner of Smith Haut Lafitte. Sylviane was known for turning around the Pessac Legonan estate around and in 2001 the estate and all of its winemaking facilities were dramatically renovated and updated. Today the vineyards are planted to about 70 acres of mainly Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The Garcin Family still own and operate Chateau Haut Bergey as well as Clos L'Église in Pomerol, Chateau Barde-Haut in the Grand Cru of Saint Emilion, and fellow Pessac-Leognan estate, Chateau Branon.
