Monchhof

Weingut Moenchhof is a winery in the Mosel region. It is one of the oldest wineries in the area. Cistercian Abbey used to own the winery in the past. Documents from Pope Alexander III in 1177 show that there were vineyards in and around Urzig village. The Himmeroder Monks built the cellars in 1509, which is still in use today. Archaeological diggings near vineyards uncovered one of the most ancient and largest wine presses north of the Alps. This discovery shows that viticulture has been going on in this region for 2000 years.
