Tasting Notes

WA94
What would have been the 2000 vintage of their vin de paille was rejected by the appellation of origin; it was too sugary, it had too much caramel and they thought something was added to the wine, when it was not the case at all. So this sweet wine is sold with a generic European appellation: 2000 Vin Issu de Raisins Surmuris. In reality, they produced the wine following exactly the same process as other vintages of their vin de paille, but they obtained a completely different wine -- much sweeter. The color is a light brown/mahogany and the nose reveals a showy mixture of roasted nuts and curry, toffee, coffee and a medium-bodied palate with superb integration of the sugar and the alcohol. It ends with flavors of salted caramel and something marine, and it is really long and surprisingly elegant; you don't really feel the sweetness here. There are 120 grams of sugar and 14% alcohol. This is really exceptional. They sell it at the property in very small quantities, so the price is approximated. 2,800 375-ml bottles were produced.
