M. Chapoutier Ermitage Le Pavillon 2004

The Winery

M. Chapoutier

"Michel Chapoutier's enthusiasm and commitment to exceptional, naturally made wines is a winemaking triumph, as well as a clear victory for all who care about the quality of wine."
-Robert Parker

While the estate was born in the early 19th century, the real story of the wines we see today began when Marius Chapoutier took the winemaking into his own hands; dissatisfied with what his neighbors were producing and with the faith he could do better.

In 1990, Michel Chapoutier quickly established his family’s estate, taking it to the top at the young age of 26. Old world coupled with biodynamics and a legacy of experience, gifts us with remarkable, unflitered wines we can enjoy now or lay down for at least a decade. Just in 2003, 88 of the wines were awarded 90+ points by highly acclaimed critics. Vintages to look out for: 1990, 1994, 1995, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001.

Summary

M. Chapoutier Ermitage Le Pavillon 2004 is a distinguished single-parcel Syrah from the iconic Hermitage region, specifically from the biodynamically farmed Les Bessards slope. This wine showcases a deep ruby hue and offers a complex bouquet of vibrant raspberry and cherry, complemented by mineral and floral notes. On the palate, it presents a rich tapestry of flavors, including black currant, licorice, and subtle spice, framed by structured tannins and a silky texture. The wine is aged 18-20 months in new French oak, contributing to its depth and elegance. With a production of only 400-700 cases, it exemplifies the classic style of the region, poised for aging with a drinking window extending into the 2030s.

Tasting Notes

WA92
All of the single vineyard Ermitages turned out as good as I had hoped, possibly even better. In short they are among the strongest wines one could hope for in this vintage. The 2004 Ermitage Le Pavillon is outstanding, but certainly not one of the most compelling wines Michel Chapoutier has made. It is dense, dark ruby/purple, and seems more austere and backward than the Le Meal, but I still think these are 15- to 20-year wines as opposed to the normal 50+ that the top vintages of these single vineyard Ermitages produce. Dense with black currant fruit intermixed with licorice, sweet blackberries, and white chocolate, this is an elegant, mid-weight Pavillon that should be drinking well in about 5-6 years and last 15-20.
