The Winery

Jacques Selosse

It is a mish-mash of different styles and eras, but this diversity gives it its soul. The house has the advantage of having a view over the vines. On three sides you can observe the vines and the seasonal vineyard activities, tractors, smoke, and grape-pickers. The house is built right on the hillside, which gives access to both the ‘crowned mountain’ and the plain. An ideal location to make you aware of how Champagne has its source in a unique geography.
-Anselme Selosse, Proprietor

Originally set up in the 1950s, Champagne Jacques Selosse is a highly regarded Champagne house that is known for utilizing unique methods of production. The house uses a solera system which is more commonly associated with Sherry production as well as, in more recent years, been the first sparkling wine house to advocate showcasing the terroir of Champagne. In 1980, Jacques’ son, Anselme, took over the estate and changed the process of how the wines were being made. He cut the yields, rid the land of chemicals, and began focusing on grand cru vineyards. Additionally, dosage is kept at an absolute minimum and in fall of 2010 Jacques Selosse made headlines when they released a collection of six different single-vineyard wines from honored villages in the region. Today the domaine produces nearly 5,000 cases of superior Champagne every year full of emotion, memories, and nonconformity.

Tasting Notes

WA97
The NV Extra-Brut Grand Cru La Cote Faron is ridiculously great. Layers of fruit emerge effortlessly from this large-scaled, dramatic Champagne. The wine needs quite of time to open up, but when it does it is a stunner. This is pure Ay in its rich, voluptuous personality and creamy texture. Red berries, dried flowers, licorice, mint and licorice are layered into the rich, seductive finish. Readers who prefer a more mineral-driven style of Blanc de Noirs will prefer the Le Bout de Clos, Selosse’s wine from Ambonnay, while those who prefer a more overt expression of fruit will flip out over the Cote Faron. Either way, it’s hard to lose. They are both magnificent. Disgorged February 21st, 2011. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2015.
